Russia increases gas supplies to EU through Belarus by 25% in 1Q21

Russia has increased natural gas supplies to the European Union (EU) through Belarus by 25% year on year in the first quarter of 2021 to a total of 10 billion cubic meters in January-March, 2021, reads the quarterly report by the European Commission (EC).<br> <br> Shipments via Nord Stream decreased by 1% to 15 billion cubic meters; transit through Ukraine was down 7% to 8 billion cubic meters.<br> <br> Nord Stream remained the main gas transportation route from Russia to the EU in the first quarter, although its share in Russia’s total gas import to the EU reduced to 41% from 45% over the year. Belarus was the second most important transit route, accounting for 29% in the first quarter of 2021 compared with 25% in 1Q20. The share of transit through Ukraine dropped to 22% from 26%.<br> <br> Turkish Stream’s share nearly doubled, reaching 8% in the first quarter of 2021 (2.7 billion cubic meters), as Gazprom started supplying gas to its customers in the Balkans, such as Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, through Bulgaria instead of Ukraine and Hungary, the European Commission says.<br> <br> In the gas export to the European Union from all countries and through all routes, Nord Stream accounted for 19%, Belarus –13%, Ukrainian – 10%, and Turkish Stream more than 3%, reads the report.
