Belarus to hold auctions for RES installation

Belarus is planning on developing the green energy sector by means of auctions for installation of renewable energy sources (RES) without quotas, as it is currently the case, Deputy Director of the Energy Efficiency Department at the State Committee of Standardization of Belarus Leonid Poleshchuk told reporters at BelTA’s press center.<br> <br> “We currently allocate quotas, but we are planning on switching to auctions, which will give an opportunity to continue RES development, including locally, for consumption by enterprises and households,” said Poleshchuk.<br> <br> Belarus’ RES capacity is about 500 MW. There are 82 photovoltaic power plants, 53 hydroelectric power plants, 30 biogas complexes, over a hundred electric power plants and 10 mini thermal power plant powered by wood fuel, he said.<br> <br> “All this makes it possible not only to reduce the consumption of traditional energy sources, but also to reduce CO2 emissions. By 2025, we will come to a point where the capacity will reach 630 MW to maintain the share of RES at 8%,” Poleshchuk said.<br> <br> Head of the Department of Energy Efficiency, Ecology and Science of the Ministry of Energy of Belarus Sergei Greben says that in 2020, Belarus generated 1.243 billion kWh of electricity from all renewable energy sources. RES installations are registered at 278 legal entities and private entrepreneurs.<br> <br> Belarus has established quotas for setting up plants RES for 2021-2023 with a total capacity of 129.5 MW. Quotas for setting up biogas power plants are established for 2022 (5 MW) and for 2023 (10 MW), wind energy – for 2020 (18.8 MW) and for 2023 (10 MW), wood fuel and other types of biomass – for 2022 (2.6 MW) and for 2023 (3 MW). Quotas for water energy installations (29.16 MW), solar energy (10 MW), geothermal heat and other energy sources not related to non-renewable sources (40 MW) are established for 2023 alone.<br> <br> As previously reported, with the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets, Grodno Oblast), the authorities are taking measures to reduce the attractiveness of energy from renewable energy sources.
