A1 assumes burden of profit tax increase without raising service fees

The amendments to the Tax Code of Belarus planned for 2021-2022, in particular an increase in the profit tax, will not affect the company’s subscribers, says A1, the Belarusian provider of telecom, ICT and content services. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the bill ‘On Amendments to the Tax Code’ passed by the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on December 18, 2020 in two readings envisages a rise in the profit tax on mobile telecom services in 2021 from 18% to 30%. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The temporary increase in the profit tax stipulated by the bill ‘On Amendments to the Tax Code’ for mobile telecom operators will not affect A1 subscribers. The company will assume the full burden,” says a company representative. </p> <p> </p> <p> A1 said previously that the proposed amendments to the 2021-2022 Tax Code would worsen the investment climate in the telecommunications industry of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We are proud that A1, part of A1 Telekom Austria Group, the largest foreign investor in information and communication technologies in Belarus, has been one of the largest taxpayers among private companies for many years. We regret that the telecommunications and IT industries are again facing the deteriorating investment climate in Belarus, while other countries proactively encourage investment in the areas related to information technologies and digital transformation,” says the company. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the bill, the higher tax rates will be in force for two years (2021-2022). </p> <p> </p> <p> Currently, mobile telecommunication services in Belarus are being provided by Beltelecom, A1, MTS and life:) operators. </p> <p> </p> <p> Established in 1998, A1 unitary enterprise is now fully owned by A1 Telekom Austria Group. The mobile operator A1 started revenue service of its 3G network based on the HSPA/HSPA+ technology in March 2010. The operator made 4G mobile internet services available to customers in March 2019. Until Aug 1, 2019 the company had been operating under the velcom brand. Its subscriber base numbered 4.882 million people as of late 3Q20. End </p>
