Belarusians’ FX sales exceed FX purchases by $189.6m in Oct 2021

FX sales by Belarus’ private households exceeded their FX purchases from banks by $189.6 million in November 2021: individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $555.3 million and sold to banks $744.9 million, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in an official statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> All in all, individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $5.769 billion and sold to banks $7.153 billion in cash foreign currency, with FX sales exceeding FX purchases by $1.384bn. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net cashless FX purchases by individuals totalled $113.1 million in November 2021: gross cashless FX purchases – $410.2 million, sales – $297.1 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Nov 2021, cashless FX purchases by individuals totalled $4.039 billion, sales – $2.677bn, margin - $1.362bn. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Nov 2021, net FX sales by individuals (both cash and cashless) stood at $76.5 million, gross purchases – $965.5m, gross sales – $1.042bn. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Nov 2021, FX purchases by individuals totalled $9.808bn, FX sales – $9.83bn, margin – $22m. </p> <p> </p> <p> In November alone, FX purchases by resident companies totalled $2.434bn, FX sales – $2.331bn, margin - $103m. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Nov 2021, FX purchases by resident companies totalled $23.735bn, FX sales – $24.497bn, margin – $762m. </p> <p> </p> <p> With non-resident companies, the Nov 2021 figures stood at $64 million (purchases), $94.6 million (sales) and $30.6 million (margin), respectively. Hence, the official data on non-residents’ FX transactions on the domestic market are incomplete. </p> <p> </p> <p> Resident banks, the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus JSC and non-bank credit and financial organizations bought in Nov 2021 at their own expense (without conversion operations) $4.345 billion, sold – $4.332 billion, margin – $12.7 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> Their FX purchases on the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange OJSC (BCSE) in Nov 2021 totalled $758.1 million, sales – $778.6 million, margin – $20.5 million. Purchases on the OTC market stood at $2.842 billion, sales – $2.999 billion, margin – minus $157 million. Purchases on the cash FX market totalled $744.9m, sales – $555.3m, margin – plus $189.6 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In January-November 2021, banks and NBFIs bought $43.363bn and sold $43.533bn. The banks had a negative balance of $170 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, since January 2020, the National Bank started publishing data on spot transactions of resident banks, the Development Bank and the NCFD at its own expense (without conversion operations) on the purchase and sale of foreign currency in the domestic market. This gives a more accurate picture of what is happening in the foreign exchange market. </p> <p> </p> <p> The official weighted average rate of the Belarusian ruble against the US dollar stood at Br2.5392/$1 in Jan-Nov 2021, in November alone - Br2.4808/$1.
