Belarusians’ FX sales exceed FX purchases by $103.8m in Jun 2021

FX sales by Belarus’ private households exceeded their FX purchases from banks by $103.8 million in June 2021: individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $560.7 million and sold to banks $664.5 million, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in an official statistical report.<br> <br> All in all, individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $3.109 billion and sold to banks $3.538 billion in cash foreign currency, with FX sales exceeding FX purchases by $429m.<br> <br> Cashless FX purchases by individuals totalled $134.4 million in Jun 2021: gross cashless FX purchases – $379 million, sales – $244.6 million.<br> <br> In Jan-Jun 2021, cashless FX purchases by individuals totalled $2.2 billion, sales – $1.313m, margin - $887m<br> <br> In Jun 2021, net FX purchases by individuals (both cash and cashless) stood at $31 million, gross purchases – $940.1m, gross sales – $909.1m.<br> <br> In Jan-Jun 2021, FX purchases by individuals totalled $5.309bn, FX sales – $4.851bn, margin – $458m. <br> <br> In Jun alone, FX purchases by resident companies totalled $2.343bn, FX sales – $2.233bn, margin - $110m. In Jan-Jun 2021, FX purchases by resident companies totalled $12.481bn, FX sales – $12.807bn, margin – $326m. <br> <br> With non-resident companies, the Jun 2021 figures stood at $53.9 million (purchases), $58.9 million (sales) and $5 million (margin), respectively. Jan-Jun 2021: $208.2m (purchases), $465.7m (sales), $257.6m – margin.<br> <br> The National Bank does not post statistical reports on currency exchange transactions conducted by non-resident companies in accordance with the EEU Treaty of May 29, 2014. Hence, the official data on non-residents’ FX transactions on the domestic market are incomplete.<br> <br> Resident banks, the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus JSC and non-bank credit and financial organizations bought in Jun 2021 at their own expense (without conversion operations) $4.012 billion, sold – $4.067 billion, margin – $55 million.<br> <br> Their FX purchases on the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange OJSC (BCSE) in Jun 2021 totalled $714.6 million, sales – $632.1 million, margin – $82.5 million. Purchases on the OTC market stood at $2.633 billion, sales – $2.874 billion, margin – minus $241 million. Purchases on the cash FX market totalled $664.5m, sales – $560.7m, margin – plus $103.8 million. <br> <br> As previously reported, since January 2020, the National Bank began to publish data on spot transactions of resident banks, the Development Bank and the NCFD at its own expense (without conversion operations) on the purchase and sale of foreign currency in the domestic market. This gives a more accurate picture of what is happening in the foreign exchange market.<br> <br> The official weighted average rate of the Belarusian ruble against the US dollar stood at Br2.5747/$1 in Jan-Jun 2021, in Jun alone - Br2.5191/$1.
