Belarus banks’ net foreign assets up 12.4% to minus $4.088bn in Jan-Jun 2021

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $4.088 billion as of July 1, 2021, up 12.4% year to date, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report.<br> <br> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions decreased by 1.5% in Jan-Jun 2021 to $1.492 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 8.3% to $5.58 billion as of July 1, 2021.<br> <br> As of July 1, 2021 deposits accounted for $790.2 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (down 8.5% year to date), credits – $75.8m (down 8.3%), foreign exchange – $528.4m (up 10%), securities (except shares) – $48m (down 6.2%), other assets – $49.7m (down 6.2%).<br> <br> Credits accounted for $4.85bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of July 1, 2021 (up 7% year to date), deposits – $652.3m (up 11.6%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2021, other liabilities - $76.2m (up 120%). <br> <br> In 2020, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 14.8% to minus $3.637 billion as of January 1, 2021.
