WANO experts find no shortcomings during prelaunch inspection of 1st power unit of Belarus’ NPP – Energy Ministry
<p> MINSK, Oct 21 - PrimePress. Experts of the Moscow center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) have completed the final stage of the prelaunch inspection of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets, District, Grodno Oblast), the press office of the Belarusian Energy Ministry reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> WANO experts examined actions of various shifts of the nuclear power plant personnel on a full-scale simulator of the reactor unit’s central control room during scenarios that simulated normal operation, breakdowns, and emergencies. Also, the experts evaluated how the Belarusian nuclear power plant had adopted 70 recommendations as a result of WANO’s Significant Operating Experience Reports (SOER). </p> <p> </p> <p> In the course of observation, interviews, and perusal of documents, the experts did not find any shortcomings that may stand in the way of the safe launch of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The final report of the expert team will be forwarded to the management of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in late 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> The nuclear power plant is expected to start generating energy in the fourth quarter of 2020. Its 1st power unit is to be put into commercial operation in the first quarter of 2021, the 2nd unit – in 2022. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. The startup of the first power unit was postponed from 2018 to 2019 and then to the first quarter of 2021. The second unit is expected to be launched in 2022. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. End </p>
