Vladimir Makey urges EU foreign ministers not to impose sanctions against Belarus
<p> MINSK, Aug 21 – PrimePress. Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makey has made a statement in which he urges EU Foreign Ministers not to impose sanctions against Belarus. The statement was published on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> Makey wrote: “We don’t always share the same approaches. But at the first serious tests for the formation of our country, you again immediately call for sanctions. By this you in fact confirm the rightness of those who do not believe in our sovereign ability to build equal and beneficial relations with your states.” </p> <p> </p> <p> He expressed an opinion that if the EU should impose sanctions, Belarus will pass through this period, but time and rhythm needed by the countries and the societies will be lost. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We have a difficult situation right now. But which of your countries has not passed the painful stages of coming of age as a nation? Let us go through this, too. It is better with your help, but without trying to force it with political, financial and other obvious levers. I beg your pardon, but we won’t be able to consider it other than benevolent actions damaging the sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus, and we won’t be able to leave it without counteraction,” said Makey. </p> <p> </p> <p> The heads of state and government of the European Union spoke out in favour of imposing sanctions against Belarus and refused to accept the results of the Aug 9 presidential election. President of the European Council, Charles Michel, made a statement to this effect following the EU extraordinary summit on Belarus on Aug 19. According to Michel, the EU black list will include those who used brutality against protesters and those who contributed to election rigging. End </p>
