US prepares new package of sanctions against Belarusian authorities over migration crisis
<p> MINSK, Dec 1 - PrimePress. The United States is planning to introduce a new package of sanctions against the Belarusian authorities in connection with the migration crisis, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said by videoconference at the Kiev Security Forum on 1 December, RIA Novosti news agency reported. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The situation in Belarus is extremely worrying for us and is tragic for the people of Belarus, who are not asking for much. They are only asking for the opportunity to elect their leader freely in fair and open elections. We, together with our partners, have imposed quite tough sanctions against the regime of [Belarusian President Alexander] Lukashenko; now we are looking for opportunities to introduce a new package of sanctions in connection with Lukashenko’s decision to use migrants as weapons,” the agency quoted Nuland as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said on 1 December that the US was preparing additional sanctions in close cooperation with the EU and other partners and allies, RIA Novosti reported. </p> <p> </p> <p> The U.S. Department of the Treasury on 3 June 2021 re-imposed full blocking sanctions against nine Belarusian state-owned enterprises previously granted relief under a series of General Licenses by the Treasury Department (Belneftekhim Concern and its U.S. representative office, as well as Belneftekhim-controlled Belshina, Grodno Azot, Grodno Khimvolokno, Lakokraska, Naftan, Polotsk-Steklovolokno, and Belarusian Oil Trading House). </p> <p> </p> <p> On 21 June 2021 the United States slapped sanctions against 16 individuals and 5 Belarusian entities: the Belarusian KGB, the Interior Ministry’s Internal Troops, GUBOPiK (Central Department for Combatting Organized Crime), the Brest Oblast Administration’s Police Department and Corruption), the Detention Facility in Okrestina Street in Minsk. </p> <p> </p> <p> In July 2021, President Lukashenko stated that, due to sanctions imposed by Western countries, he no longer intended to restrain illegal migration to the European Union. This was followed by attempts to illegally cross the border with Lithuania, Poland and Latvia by migrants from the Middle East, with total inactivity of the Belarusian border service.
