Ukraine not to resume electricity export from Belarus from 1 Nov

Ukraine will not be able to start purchasing electricity from Belarus from 1 November 2021, said Andrey Gerus, head of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Inter RAO (Russian electricity supplier – editor’s note) on 20 October announced an auction to sell electricity, but the respective auction was cancelled on 21 October. Also, starting from November 1, there will be no imports of electricity from Belarus, the respective electricity auctions have been cancelled,” Gerus said in Telegram. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Ukraine planned to resume imports of electricity from Belarus from 1 November 2021 due to a shortage of coal at state-owned thermal power plants. Permission for resuming power export was obtained from Ukraine’s National Commission, which carries out state regulation in the energy and utilities sectors. </p> <p> </p> <p> The National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission of Ukraine permitted importing electricity from Belarus as from 1 November. Energoatom on 27 Nov 2021 participated in a monthly auction (November) to secure throughput capacity of Belarusian-Ukrainian transboundary power lines and received 885MW as a result. On 28 October Energoatom announced that Ukraine views Belarus as a backup supplier of electricity to cover capacity shortfalls in case of emergency situations in the country’s energy system. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Ukraine suspended electricity import from Belarus and Russia for the period from 26 May to 1 October 2021. Subsequently, the ban was extended till 31 Oct 2021. End </p>
