Talks on refinancing Belarus’ $1bn debt to Russia continue — Kremlin

Contacts continue,” Peskov said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Earlier, the Russian Finance Ministry reported that it would consider Belarus’ request to refinance the country’s debt in the amount of $1 billion, if it is submitted. </p> <p> </p> <p> On Aug 27, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he had made a preliminary agreement with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin about restructuring Belarus’ $1bn debt to Russia. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Belarus’ Ministry of Finance, as of Mar 31, 2020, the country’s external public debt on bilateral loans of the Russian government and Vnesheconombank of Russia (VEB.RF) amounted to $7.925 billion (about 48% of the total external public debt). In 2020, Belarus’ payments to service the Russian part of the national debt are estimated at $1.25 billion. In H1 2020, via credit lines of the Russian government and Vnesheconombank Belarus raised $363 million and repaid $343 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> Since 2018, the Russian government has denied refinancing loans to the Belarusian authorities.
