Svetlogorsk bleached pulp plant eager to reach rated capacity in 2023
<p> MINSK, Jul 29 – PrimePress. The Svetlogorsk-based Pulp and Cardboard Plant (Gomel Oblast) plans to reach its rated capacity for bleached pulp production in 2023, said Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Task number one is to bring bleached pulp production to its design capacity of 400,000 tonnes in 2023. We know the background as to why the project could not be implemented within the deadline. At present, the work has been set up, the enterprise produces about 270,000 tonnes,” Golovchenko said. </p> <p> </p> <p> He said that the products of the bleached sulphate pulp plant are in demand in Belarus and abroad. “Still, it is a raw material, albeit of high quality. Our task is to make products with higher added value from this raw material on our territory. It is important to capitalize on our competitive advantage of raw materials,” said Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> The bleached pulp plant designed to manufacture 400,000 tonnes per year was built by China’s CAMCE. The total value of the project initially stood at $860m and was partially financed at the expense of China’s credit to the tune of $654.164m. However, serious difficulties and contradictions emerged between partners in the process of work. As a result, it took a much longer period of time to launch the new production facility. The project was accomplished with the assistance of a Belarusian contractor. </p> <p> </p> <p> Established in 1968, Svetlogorsk Pulp and Cardboard Mill is the only manufacturer of cellulose in Belarus, with the government holding a stake of 99.988%. </p> <p> </p> <p> The plant exports its products to the CIS countries, the Baltic States and the European Union. The enterprise includes a pulp factory, a cardboard and paper mill, and a cardboard and paper container factory. End </p>
