Single voting day: Belarus to combine parliamentary/municipal elections

A single voting day will be set in Belarus to elect members of parliament and deputies of municipal councils, in accordance with the bill “On amending the Constitution of Belarus”. The bill passed its first reading in the lower chamber of Belarus’ parliament on June 25. </p> <p> </p> <p> In a speech to presenting the bill, Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said that “the approach enshrined in the bill will allow local councils of deputies of the 28th convocation to exercise their powers before the start of the term of office of deputies elected on a single voting day”. </p> <p> </p> <p> This will save budget funds, he said. “It will take Br25 million ($9.9 million at the exchange rate of the National Bank of Belarus) to hold the elections to local councils in 2022. Half of this amount has already been budgeted for 2021. If the draft law is implemented, these funds will be saved,” said Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the Constitution of Belarus establishes an equal term of office for deputies of all levels - four years. Elections to local councils of deputies were to be held no later than January 18, 2022. After the adoption of constitutional amendments this election campaign will be postponed to 2023 and combined with elections to the National Assembly. End </p>
