Sanctions may force Belaruskali into alliance with Uralkali - expert

An alliance between Belaruskali and Uralkali is possible after the economic sectoral sanctions of the European Union against Belarus, reckons Aza Migranyan, lead researcher at the Centre for Post-Soviet Studies at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. </p> <p> </p> <p> On June 24th the EU officially adopted economic sectoral sanctions against Belarus, including the ban on export of potash fertilizers to the EU market. </p> <p> </p> <p> Migranyan suggested that the reaction to the sanctions “may be the inclusion of intermediaries and possibly a takeover, a merger or entry into a larger consortium, the alliance with Uralkali - something that has been said before”. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We will have to consider how toxic these sanctions are in terms of the interests of other companies, including Uralkali, in order to address these issues,” the expert said.
