Russia fully indemnifies Belarus’ losses caused by substandard oil supply – Russian ambassador

Russia has fulfilled its obligations to indemnify damages incurred by Belarus due to the supply of 1.2 million tonnes of contaminated oil through the Druzhba pipeline in April 2019, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev told RIA Novosti. </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, in late April 2019, the chloride-contaminated oil was pumped through the Druzhba pipeline system. As a result, transportation of oil from Russia to Europe via Belarus was suspended and then resumed on July 1. According to the Belarusian state petrochemical concern Belneftekhim, Belarus received over 1.2 million tonnes of dirty oil, which damaged equipment at the Mozyr Oil Refinery OJSC (Gomel Oblast). </p> <p> </p> <p> Belneftekhim Spokesman Alexander Tishchenko said that Belarus could get over $61 million from Russia in compensation for the substandard oil incident at the of $15 per barrel. On January 21, 2021, Russian Lukoil transferred the first tranche to the Mozyr Oil Refinery in the amount of 1.045 billion Russian rubles ($14.1 million at the rate of the Central Bank of Russia).
