Rosatom ready to build 2nd NPP in Belarus – CEO
<p> MINSK, Nov 9 - PrimePress. Russian Rosatom State Corporation is ready to participate in the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Belarus, should the authorities decide so. The corporation would optimize the cost and timeframe, says Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev. </p> <p> </p> <p> President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said earlier that the country needs a second nuclear power plant not to depend on oil and gas supplies. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We are ready not only to assist, but to participate, understanding that the degree of localization will increase even more. Belarusian specialists have performed more than a half of general construction works anyway, which is basically unprecedented. If we continue building here, then, of course, Belarusian specialists will contribute even more competencies. We will obviously shorten the time of the construction and definitely optimize the cost,” Likhachev said on STV channel. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The first power unit was launched on November 3, 2020. It is expected to be put into commercial operation in February 2021; the second unit – in May 2022. End </p>
