Proposed amendments to Belarus’ Tax Code may undermine investment climate in telecom industry – A1

The proposed amendments to the Tax Code of Belarus for the years 2021-2022 can worsen the investment climate in the telecommunications industry of Belarus, says A1, the Belarusian provider of telecommunications, ICT and content services. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We are proud that A1, part of A1 Telekom Austria Group, the largest foreign investor in information and communication technologies in Belarus, has been one of the largest taxpayers among private companies for many years. We regret that the telecommunications and IT industries are again facing the deteriorating investment climate in Belarus, while other countries proactively encourage investment in the areas related to information technologies and digital transformation,” says the company. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, it is proposed to raise the profit tax on Belarusian mobile operators in 2021 from 18% to 30%, as prescribed by the bill ‘On Amendments to the Tax Code’ passed by the House of Representatives in two readings on December 18, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Currently, mobile telecommunication services in Belarus are being provided by Beltelecom, A1, MTS and life:) operators. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the bill, the higher tax rates will be in force for two years (2021-2022).
