Premature to talk about single currency of Russia and Belarus – CBR chief

It is premature to talk about creating a single currency of Russia and Belarus, Chairwoman of the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) Elvira Nabiullina told reporters on 10 September. </p> <p> </p> <p> “As for the single currency, I think it is premature to talk about it. The Russian president said so, too,” Prime reports citing Nabiullina as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Lukashenko and Putin at a meeting in Moscow on 9 Sep 2021 reconciled all 28 Union programmes to deepen the integration of the two countries. On 10 Sep 2021 the Council of Ministers of the Union State approved the 2021-2023 guidelines for the implementation of the provisions of the Treaty on the Creation of the Union State and 28 Union State programmes aimed to accomplish major aspects of strengthening Russia-Belarus integration. According to President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, the Union Programmes are to be approved at the meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State on 4 November 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Following his talks with Putin on Sep 9, Lukashenko emphasized that the issue of introducing a single currency in the Union State rests on the issue of a single issuing centre. In Jan 2021, Lukashenko informed that Belarus and Russia had not yet profoundly considered the single currency launch. The 1999 Union Treaty provided for the gradual launch of a single currency and a single currency issuer. Lukashenko previously welcomed the idea of a single currency of the Union, but, as he said, it should not be either the Belarusian or the Russian ruble.
