Naftan sends workers to Grodno Azot to prevent production interruptions

Naftan OJSC (Novopolotsk, Vitebsk Oblast) sent its employees to help ensure uninterrupted technological processes at Grodno Azot OJSC, some of whose employees announced they were joining the strike, Naftan CEO Andrei Soiko said in the statement posted on the website of Naftan’s corporate newspaper. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Today we sent our specialists to you to help ensure a continuous technological process and to prevent production interruptions, including due to the difficult epidemiological situation,” Soiko said. </p> <p> </p> <p> He said that as the local economic mainstays, Naftan and Grodno Azot are the major taxpayers in their oblasts. Naftan supplies benzene and sulfuric acid to Grodno Azot, using ammonia produced by Grodno Azot. </p> <p> </p> <p> Grodno Azot CEO Igor Bobyr says the COVID-19 pandemic produces heavy impacts on the situation. “Taking into account the recent developments, we have formed a reserve of specialists, both under training programs and for hiring experienced personnel from other regions and enterprises. The number of applicants is higher than required. The time has come to use this reserve,” Bobyr says. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarusian Telegram channels and media began to report on October 26 workers’ assemblies at Grodno Azot, Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant, Minsk Tractor Plant, Minsk Electro-Technical Plant and some other enterprises. A number of Grodno Azot employees supported the strike. </p> <p> </p> <p> Launched in 1963, Naftan is Belarus’ largest refinery and one of the largest in Europe. In 2008, Naftan incorporated another Belarusian refinery Polimir. 99.83% of the company belongs to the state. Naftan is capable of producing about 400,000 tonnes of diesel fuel per year. Naftan produces euro-4 and euro-5 diesel fuel, petrol and lubricants, which are exported to the EU, the Middle East and the United States. </p> <p> </p> <p> Grodno Azot has been operating since 1963. It was transformed into a joint-stock company in 2002. Khimvolokno OJSC was incorporated into the company in October 2011. Annual output of liquid technical ammonia totals 976,800 tonnes, carbamide – 945,000 tonnes, liquid nitrogen fertilizers – 720 tonnes, ammonium sulfate – 319,000 tonnes, industrial methanol – 80,000 tonnes, caprolactam – 121,200 tonnes, crystalline hydroxylamine sulfate – 3,300 tonnes, fatty acid methyl esters (biofuel) – 40,000 tonnes, highest quality carbon dioxide – 24,000 tonnes.
