Minsk engages in dialogue on preserving economic relations with Ukraine – Lukashenko
<p> MINSK, Aug 27 - PrimePress. Belarus’ authorities are engaged in a dialogue on the preserving economic relations with Ukraine. </p> <p> </p> <p> President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made a statement to this effect on August 27 during the festive ceremony to launch the Petrikov Mining and Processing Factory (Gomel Oblast) operated by Belaruskali potash maker (Soligorsk, Minsk Oblast), Lukashenko’s press service said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko said: “Our neighbour Ukraine was the breadbasket of the Soviet Union, and it will remain so. They need a huge amount of mineral fertilizers, including potash. Today, despite the position of the Ukrainian government, Belarus seeks to save economic relations and to develop cooperation. Ukrainians are our kin. In any situation, we will have a warm regard for these people, whatever the position of your president (Volodymyr Zelensky) is.” </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Ukraine, just like member states of the European Union, the USA, the UK, Canada and their other allies, would not recognize the official results of the 9 August 2020 presidential election in Belarus, which declared Alexander Lukashenko the winner for the sixth time with 80.1% of the vote. Following the authorities' violent crackdown on thousands-strong peaceful protests, Western countries imposed targeted sanctions on Belarusian officials and individual companies and institutions. Ukraine has joined the personal sanctions imposed by the West, but not the economic sanctions. </p> <p> </p> <p> At the same time, as of May 26, Ukraine suspended air links with Belarus following the incident with the forced landing of a Ryanair aircraft in Minsk and banned Ukrainian airlines and aircraft to perform flights in the Belarusian airspace. In late May, Belarus introduced a six-month individual licensing regime for import of a number of Ukrainian goods: confectionery, chocolate, juices, beer, chipboard and fibreboard, wallpaper, toilet paper and packaging, bricks, ceramic tiles, glass ampoules, agricultural machinery for seeding, washing machines and furniture.
