MART reports 9.5% yoy increase in staple goods prices in Nov 2021, down from 10.5% in Oct 2021

November 2021 saw a 9.5% year-on-year increase in prices of socially important goods (staple goods) in Belarus, according to the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade’s (MART) overview of the price situation on the consumer market in November 2021. To compare, in Oct 2021 staple goods prices in Belarus grew by 10.5% year on year. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The year-on-year increase in the consumer price index and the consumer price index for socially important goods was mainly influenced by the decelerating increase in prices for fruit and vegetables in Nov 2021 to 20.7% year on year after a 24.8% yoy increase in Oct 2021,” MART explained. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The continuing trend of higher commodity prices on external markets continues to have a negative impact on domestic consumer prices: according to MART estimates, the annual increase in global food prices in November 2021 remained at 30% and amounted to 29.3% (29.8% in October). In Russia, food prices rose by 12% year on year, fruit and vegetable products by 19.4%, and overall inflation accelerated to its highest level since June 2016 - 8.4%,” said MART. </p> <p> </p> <p> November 2021 also saw acceleration in the year-on-year growth of prices for critical imports and goods with a high import content: cereals and pulses (up to 8.6% in November from 6.1% in October year-on-year), fish and fish products (up to 12.4% from 10.8%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In November 2021, the growth of footwear prices accelerated to 5.1% year on year from 2.9%, wallpaper - 7.9% from 5.5% synthetic detergents - 11.8% from 9%. In addition, prices of meat and meat products continue to rise, up 14.8% year on year in November to compared with 14.3% in October. </p> <p> </p> <p> November also saw a continuing increase in prices of motor fuel (by 0.5%), vodka (by 0.3%), tobacco products (by 0.4%) and medical services tariffs (by 0.5%). Prices for medicines decreased by 0.1%. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, inflation in Belarus in November 2021 stood at 0.5%, January-November - 9%.
