Lukashenko wants symmetric retaliatory sanctions against West
<p> MINSK, Jan 12 - PrimePress. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed the government to consider a symmetric response to the Western sanctions. He spoke about this on January 12, 2021 when hearing a report by Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Nazarov and Industry Minister Piotr Parkhomchik, the presidential press office reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Two or three enterprises of ours have fallen under the so-called “cut-throat” Western sanctions. Yuri Viktorovich [Nazarov], tell Golovchenko [Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko] about this and consider it with the government. We should respond symmetrically. They imposed sanctions against our enterprises. We must see which countries did it and we must respond accordingly,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> He said several thousand foreign companies are operating in Belarus. “If they made steps in the wrong direction and start bending us over, we must respond symmetrically,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Massive protest actions against the official voting results began in Belarus after the presidential election of August 9, 2020, in which Lukashenko was declared the winner for the sixth time with 80.1% of the vote. According to official reports, over 7,000 people were detained, hundreds injured, and three killed in the first few days (August 9-11) alone. As many as 2,000 facts of beatings and torture have been reported. After that, European countries, the United States, the United Kingdom and their allies imposed personal sanctions against a group of Belarusian officials, including Lukashenko, and a number of Belarusian companies, Beltechexport, Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant, Dana Holdings managed by Serbian businessmen, and Synesis IT company among them.
