Lukashenko threatens to hire Ukrainian miners to replace Belaruskali strikers
<p> MINSK, Aug 21 – PrimePress. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says it is possible to recruit Ukrainian miners to replace the striking employees of Belaruskali. Lukashenko made a statement to this effect this during a trip to the Dzerzhinsky agro-industrial farm on August 21, reads a message posted by Lukashenko’s press service. </p> <p> </p> <p> “So why are you on strike? Okay, you’re on strike - okay. I command the director: do not go running after them. We have 2 thousand people in Soligorsk who want to work for Belaruskali. They’ll come. If they don’t – there’s unemployment all over the world. Miners will come from Ukraine. There crowds of unemployed people there,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported with reference to Chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions Alexander Yaroshuk, large Belarusian factories are creating strike committees. In the morning on August 20, Yaroshuk told the radio "Echo of Moscow” said that only Belaruskali, one of the world’s largest producers of potassium chloride, was on strike. On August 19, Belaruskali reported that all mining departments were operating. </p> <p> </p> <p> The state-owned Belarusian company OAO Belaruskali is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of potash fertilizers. It operates the Starobinskoye potash salts deposit and comprises four mine groups, auxiliary shops and support units. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belaruskali controls 16% of the world’s potash fertilizer market. Belaruskali supplies potash fertilizers to more than 50 countries, with OAO Belarus Potash Company acting as a sole export agent. End </p>
