Lukashenko requests solid substantiation of biometric IDs launch in Belarus

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed at the meeting held on January 25, 2021 to look from all angles at the organizational and technical details of the biometric documents launch in the country, the presidential press office reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> Those in charge of the matter believe that biometric IDs will give an impetus to the advancement of electronic services, expedite some procedures and enhance counterfeit protection. “It’s good that we are pushing forward electronic services. However, I strongly doubt that this will ensure counterfeit protection, considering recent events,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the president, the application of biometric documents, passports in particular, raises doubts, since this innovation will affect everyone, while Belarusians should have more opportunities, rather than problems. “We must not lose sight of the difficulties people and organizations may encounter when receiving new documents and using them,” Lukashenko said. </p> <p> </p> <p> He wants all organizational points and technicalities to be looked at from all angles. “Won’t we put obstacles to the people when exercising their rights and protecting their personal data? This worries me the most. Won’t we end up with another problem, so to speak? Should we introduce biometric documents right away, as suggested, starting April 30, or do we need more time to prepare? All issues should be thoroughly considered before issuing new documents,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Interior and Telecommunication Ministries of Belarus have been appointed as coordinators of the project.
