MINSK, Oct 23 - PrimePress. Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko intends to build new high-tech enterprises in the country and continue modernizing old plants. Firstly, high-tech enterprises, because it is useless to build old ones: we will not be able to compete in the market and sell our products. This is the main thing,” said Lukashenko.

He referred to the wood processing industry as an example. In his words, Belarus with its significant forestland and timber resources, once supplied timber for export, then as a result of modernization of the industry the production of pulp, which used to be imported to the country, was organized. Now the next stage is when it is necessary to make various finished products with high added value from pulp. “Here we are selling pulp to China and rejoicing. And we need to make it into an end product, a commodity. That will make sense. In agriculture, we have learned how to do it well. We will slowly go deeper and make a decent profit from it,” said Lukashenko.

He said that such new high-tech industries as space and nuclear power have been developed in Belarus. However, in the future Belarus should not focus only on such large-scale projects from scratch. “This is not our goal. We are not that rich, and maybe we don’t need them that much. We will develop those competencies and areas wh ere we have a relevant level of competence. We will go deeper so that the added value is higher. This is the meaning of next year's new investment cycle. The meaning of this investment cycle is to build new high-tech enterprises and, by modernising, developing the old one, deepen production,” said Lukashenko.

Lukashenko is expected to have his say on the 2021 draft forecast for socioeconomic development in November before these documents are forwarded to the National Assembly.
