Lithuania to install X-ray equipment on border with Belarus to scan trains to prevent cigarette smuggling

The Lithuanian Customs Department has signed a contract to implement an X-ray control system for passing trains at the railway checkpoint (BCP) in Kena on the border with Belarus, the Centre for Transport Strategies (Ukraine) reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Lithuanian side signed the contract last Friday. Nuctech Warsaw, the winning bidder, is expected to do so in the next few days, said Vitas Volungevicius, a spokesman for the Customs Department. </p> <p> </p> <p> The value of the contract has been preliminary estimated at 4 million euros. </p> <p> </p> <p> It is presumed that the equipment will be mounted and will start operating in Q2 2022. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Lithuanian Customs, there were 14 seizures of counterfeit cigarettes transported by rail in 2019, 36 in 2020 and 37 in the first half of 2021.
