MINSK, Aug 20 – PrimePress. Large Belarusian factories are creating strike committees, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a statement made by Chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions Alexander Yaroshuk.
In his words, strike committees are created at MAZ, BelAZ, MTZ and BMZ.
“We have not yet announced the establishment of the National Committee, as strike committees are not yet formed locally everywhere. First we need to build the structure from below, build the house, and then the roof,” Yaroshuk said.
A lot of Belarusian enterprises have responded to the proposal to form the National Strike Committee, he says.
“The time factor plays a big role. Indeed, people have risen up and assembled at the entrances to their enterprises. They don’t know how to act yet, but they are quickly learning. I think it’s real to form a National Strike Committee as soon as possible,” he said.
Alexander Yaroshuk compared the current situation with the early 1990s, when there were strikes in the country. At that time, he explained, it took several months for the entire procedure to enter into strikes, but now the situation is developing more dynamically, with strike committees being formed in just a week.
According to the chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions, company administrations take advantage of the fact that the workers do not know the procedure, pointing to the need to follow certain procedures when declaring strikes, such as the presence of a quorum or notification of the strike within two weeks.
“But this has nothing to do with the strikes that are now being declared: these are political strikes, with demands for the resignation of the authorities. Political strikes are prohibited in our country, but according to the Constitution, people as a source of power can rise up against usurpation of power,” said Yaroshuk.
In the morning on August 20, Yaroshuk told the radio "Echo of Moscow” said that only Belaruskali, one of the world’s largest producers of potassium chloride, was on strike.
On August 19, Belaruskali reported that all mining departments were operating. End
