German parliament calls for new presidential elections in Belarus
<p> MINSK, Nov 5 - PrimePress. The Parliament of Germany on Nov 4, 2020, adopted a resolution calling to support Belarus’ civil society, immediately release all Belarusian political prisoners and the hold a presidential election re-run. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, since the presidential elections on August 9, 2020, in which Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner for the sixth time with 80.1% of the vote, thousands-strong protest actions against the official results have been held in Belarus. In the course of the first days, August 9-11, the riot police and other law enforcers of Belarus violently dispersed peaceful demonstrations using special weapons, including stun grenades and rubber bullets. According to official data, in the first days alone more than 7,000 people were detained, hundreds of people were injured and three protesters died. There are reports of Belarusian policemen beating and torturing hundreds of detainees. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Deutsche Welle, the resolution also contains a whole list of specific measures aimed at strengthening civil society bodies in Belarus, supporting independent media and individuals affected by the repression of the Belarusian authorities. </p> <p> </p> <p> The preamble to the resolution states that the Bundestag does not recognise the official results of the Aug 9 presidential elections in Belarus, strongly condemns the actions of the Belarusian authorities aimed at suppressing protests, and demands the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to repression against the opposition. </p> <p> </p> <p> The authors of the resolution also demand imposing targeted sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko in person and his immediate circle, as well as all those responsible for political repression, violence and election fraud. In addition, members of the German Parliament called for the active involvement of not only the OSCE, but also Russia. End </p>
