German business voices concern over crackdown in Belarus, urging to find ways to dialogue

German business is concerned over the crackdown on protesters in Belarus and calls on both sides to find a peaceful solution, reads the statement by head of Chairman of the Eastern Committee of German Economy Oliver Hermes. </p> <p> </p> <p> The presidential election was held in Belarus on August 9. According to the updated preliminary data of the Central Election Commission, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko polled 80.08%; 10.09% voted for Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. Mass unauthorized protest actions took place in several cities of Belarus in the evening of August 9 and 10. The police used tear gas, water cannons and stun grenades against the protesters. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We call on all parties to find a peaceful solution and avoid further violence. The government and the opposition in Belarus should find a way to exchange views for the benefit of the nation,” reads the statement released by the press office of the Eastern Committee of German Economy, which unites German companies in Eastern Europe and post-Soviet republics. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Hermes, Germany and Europe could act as an intermediary in possible negotiations between the opposing parties. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Belarus is of great importance to the German economy as a hub and link between Central and Eastern Europe and a gateway to the Eurasian Economic Union.
