First unit of Belarus’ NPP to be put into operation in 2021, NPP in 1H22 – decree

The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast) will be put into operation in 2021, the NPP – in the first half of 2022, as per presidential decree No.447 of November 30, 2020 posted on the National Legal Internet Portal of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> The NPP will be commissioned in accordance with the plan for the commissioning the first and second units of the NPP. The government of Belarus is to determine the procedure for commissioning start-up facilities and to list the agencies that will issue commissioning certificates. </p> <p> </p> <p> The government will appoint commissioning team at least 40 days prior to the scheduled date of commissioning of each unit and approve certificates of acceptance of the start-up facilities. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The first power unit of the NPP is expected to be put into commercial operation in February 2021, the second power unit – in May 2022. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. End </p>
