European Parliament recommends EU Council to consider sectoral sanctions against Belarus

The European Parliament has recommended that the Council of the European Union (EU) should consider sectoral sanctions against Belarus, which should not have a negative impact on the population. Sectoral sanctions is part of the package of recommendations on relations with Belarus adopted by the European Parliament on October 21 for the EU Council, the European Commission and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, which was voted for by 690 MPs, against - 44, said the press service of the European Parliament. </p> <p> </p> <p> The European Parliament also recommends that the negotiations on the EU-Belarus Partnership Priorities must be put on hold until free and fair elections can be organized. It is also recommended to stop financing projects with the participation of the Belarusian state, strengthen support to civil society. </p> <p> </p> <p> European MPs confirmed support to the decision taken by the EU and its member states not to recognise the fraudulent election results as announced by the Belarusian Central Election Commission; underlines that Alexander Lukashenko will not be the legitimate president of the country once his current term of office expires on 5 November. </p> <p> </p> <p> The European Parliament demands an immediate halt to the violence, cruel repression, torture and crackdown against peaceful protesters, and that all political prisoners and imprisoned civil society representatives and journalists are immediately and unconditionally released; calls on the EU to implement the sanctions agreed by the EU’s foreign affairs ministers and the European Council as soon as possible, targeting a large group of people with asset freezes and travel bans, and widening the scope to include Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the leaders of the European Union at the Brussels summit on October 1-2 agreed sanctions against Belarus.
