European experts to visit Belarus’ NPP in Feb 2021 – Gosatomnadzor

European experts are expected to visit the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast) in February 2021, says Oleg Sobolev, advisor at the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor). </p> <p> </p> <p> A source in the European Union earlier told RIA Novosti that representatives of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) were planning to visit the Belarusian NPP on the second week of February 2021. Previously, European Commission and ENSREG experts were scheduled to visit the NPP construction site on December 16-18, 2020 as part of the Peer Review of the National Action Plan following stress tests conducted in 2018. Gosatomnadzor said later that the visit would not take place. </p> <p> </p> <p> “A technical visit of European experts to the Belarusian nuclear power plant as part of the Peer Review of our National Action Plan after the stress tests is planned for the week that begins on February 8,” BelTA state newswire quotes Sobolev as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> The experts will be shown the safety system and documentation. “Technical expert consultations were held this week on three points relates to the stress tests. An administrative event to prepare for the visit was held today,” Sobolev said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus has been cooperating with ENSREG to ensure safety of the NPP. During the previous peer reviews, ENSREG inspectors officially reported that they did not find any deviations from the IAEA safety standards. Belarus plans to execute the National Action Plan based on the stress test findings by 2025. The most recent safety verification was carried out by Minsk together with the European Commission represented by ENSREG in 2017-2018. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. According to decree No.447, the first power unit of the NPP will be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in the first half of 2022. End </p>
