EU set to impose sectoral sanctions to create conditions for new coup attempts in Belarus – Golovchenko

Western countries consider the economic branches that make a tangible contribution to the GDP as pressure points. Those are oil refining, production of fertilizers, and other sectors. Mishustin, in turn, stressed that Russia is against unilateral sanctions and diktat in the international arena. “We call not to politicize the situation with the Ryanair emergency landing in Minsk and support the position of our Belarusian partners on the need for a transparent international investigation by the aviation authorities,” he said.
Mishustin noted that the trade turnover between Russia and Belarus increased by 25% year on year in Q1 2021 and exceeded the pre-pandemic level. In the current quarter, the authorities also recorded growth in trade and economic turnover between the two countries.
Belarus used a fighter aircraft on May 23 to force down a Ryanair flight on its way from Athens to Vilnius under the guise of a bomb threat, which subsequently proved to be false, and arrested dissident journalist Roman Protasevich, who was listed as a terrorist by the Belarusian authorities and declared wanted by the state.
