EU Permanent Representatives Committee approves 3rd package of sanctions against Belarus’ officials

The Permanent Representatives Committee of the European Union (EU) has approved on December 16, 2020 the third package of sanctions against Belarusian authorities, including several legal entities, Russian TASS News Agency reports, citing a source in a European delegation to the EU Council. </p> <p> </p> <p> The package is now pending approval by the EU Council on December 17 and published in the Official Journal of the European Union, and then it will come into force. It is assumed that 29 more individuals and 7 legal entities will be put on the sanctions list. </p> <p> </p> <p> The European Union has repeatedly stated that it does not recognize the result of the presidential elections in Belarus held on August 9, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Earlier, the EU issued two packages of sanctions against several Belarusian officials that are believed to be involved in the crackdown on protest actions and election rigging: against 40 officials on October 2 and against 15 officials, including Alexander Lukashenko, on November 6, 2020.
