EU Council broadens scope of criteria for sanctions amid escalating migration crisis

The Council of the European Union (EU) on 15 Nov 2021 broadened the listing criteria on which specific sanction designations can be based, so the EU could target individuals and entities amid the escalating migration crisis om the EU’s external borders. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The Council has amended its sanctions regime in view of the situation at the EU’s border with Belarus, so as to be able to respond to the instrumentalisation of human beings carried out by the Belarus regime for political purposes… The sanctions regime was amended by way of a Council decision and a Council regulation, which broaden the listing criteria on which specific designations can be based. The EU will now be able to target individuals and entities organising or contributing to activities by the Lukashenko regime that facilitate illegal crossing of the EU’s external borders,” TASS reports citing the EU Council’s statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> Earlier, President of the European Council Charles Michel said on 10 November that Brussels was ready to use different tools, including diplomatic ones, to overcome the migrant crisis on the border with Belarus. He assured that member states of the European Union express unanimous solidarity with Poland and the Baltic States. </p> <p> </p> <p> On the morning of 8 November, organised groups of illegal migrants, escorted by Belarusian security forces, arrived at the Bruzgi-Kuznica Bialostocka border crossing on the Belarus-Poland border. They seek to illegal cross the Polish border. The Polish side estimated their number to be three to four thousand. The migrants made a few unsuccessful attempts to storm their way through the border fence. Poland has completely closed the Bruzgi-Kuznica Bialostocka border checkpoint for an indefinite period. </p> <p> </p> <p> In July 2021, President Lukashenko stated that, due to sanctions imposed by Western countries, he no longer intended to restrain illegal migration to the European Union. This was followed by attempts to illegally cross the border with Lithuania, Poland and Latvia by migrants from the Middle East, with total inactivity of the Belarusian border service. By 1 November, the Polish border guards alone registered 23 thousand such attempts. End </p>
