MINSK, Oct 14 - PrimePress. The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) should promote the creation of supranational companies or consortia.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made a statement to this effect at the Oct 14 session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council held via videoconference.
Lukashenko says that too little has been done on import substitution in the EEU so far. In his opinion, this process should be linked with the industrial cooperation in the union. “In order to avoid protectionism at the national level, we need to make maximum use of the industrial capacity and resources of our countries. And they are not insignificant. It is important not just to promote industrial cooperation, but also to encourage more advanced forms of cooperation by creating supranational Eurasian companies or consortia,” he said.
According to him, the Belarusian side links further development of the EEU with the full and timely implementation of the 2025 Strategy for the Development of the Eurasian Economic Integration. “It is important to focus now on implementing the measures stipulated in this document. Only in this case by 1 January 2025 we will get a full-fledged economic union with common markets of goods, services, capital and labour,” said Lukashenko.
He called for accelerating the formation of the EEU digital space. “According to our estimates, the process of creating and launching an integrated information system of the union is slow. We have been building it for about ten years. Despite the immensity and complexity of the project it is hard to consider these results satisfactory. Out of almost 90 common processes, just over 20 are working normally,” he said.
In his view, the development of an agreement on a unified customs transit system should be accelerated. Its adoption along with the agreement on the use of navigation seals in the EEU to track shipments would help increase the transit flow of goods.
Lukashenko said that the EEU member states should think seriously about their food security and take a number of decisions in this direction. “We have to think seriously about food security of our countries, protection against external price shocks caused by a rush demand for one agricultural product or another,” he said.
To further develop the agro-industrial complex, he suggested introducing a system of medium- and long-term planning of the agro-industrial complex at the EEU level, taking into account the development of the global agricultural market.
“The problem of unilateral bans and restrictions on the supply of goods should be finally solved,” Lukashenko said. To do this, he said, it is necessary to ensure timely and full-fledged interstate exchange of information in the sphere of sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary control.
The EEU is an international economic integration association established on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space, which has been operating since 1 January 2015. The EEU ensures freedom of movement of goods, as well as services, capital and labour, and pursues coordinated, harmonised or unified policies in the sectors of the economy. End
