EEC Council approves timeframe for phased introduction of dairy products labelling in EEU countries

The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) on 23 Dec 2020 approved the timeframe for the phased introduction of labelling of dairy products in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU - Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia). </p> <p> </p> <p> Iya Malkina, Assistant to the EEC head, released this information during a briefing on December 24. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The EEC Council on Wednesday approved a list of goods - certain types of dairy products, which are subject to labelling by means of identification marks. In particular, it set a time limit for introducing a ban on unlabelled goods from this list," Prime agency reports citing Malkina as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> The document proposes that the mandatory labelling of goods throughout the EEU should be introduced in three stages. Until June 1, 2021 - cheese, as well as ice cream and other kinds of food ice containing or not containing cocoa. Until September 1, 2021 - dairy products (milk, cream, yoghurt, kefir, cottage cheese, butter) with a storage period of over 40 days. Until December 1, 2021 - dairy products with shelf life of up to 40 days, inclusive. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Malkina, a number of products do not have to be labelled, such as baby food for children under three years old. The shelf stock of products are not subject to labelling either. </p> <p> </p> <p> It is up to each EEU member state to decide on the date for introducing the ID labels, Malkina said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Earlier, in December 2020, the Russian government approved new deadlines for mandatory labelling of dairy products in Russia. For cheese and ice cream it will start on 1 June 2021, for dairy products with a shelf life of more than 40 days - 1 September 2021, for products with a shelf life of up to 40 days inclusive - 1 December 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, in September 2020, the EEC Council agreed to introduce dairy product labelling as soon as the EEU countries are ready.
