MINSK, Nov 17 - PrimePress. The disconnection of Belarus from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) would produce a modest impact, as the country can use an alternative like Russian Mir Pay, says head of Europe and principal Russia analyst at British Verisk Maplecroft consulting company Daragh McDowell.
Ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said earlier that she was seeking to disconnect Belarus from SWIFT and denial of lending by foreign banks to Belarusbank and Belagroprombank.
McDowell believes that it is unlikely at the moment that Belarus will be disconnected, since Russia is still a member of the SWIFT Board of Directors, and the U.S. will hardly turn its eye back to to the Belarusian crisis until the inauguration of president elect Biden scheduled for January 20.
If Belarus is disconnected, it can bypass this restriction by using the Russian analogue of Mir Pay, McDowell said.
SWIFT is an international interbank system for information transfer and payments. It unites more than 11,000 largest organizations in about 200 countries. End
