Common gas market: EEU states to continue consultations on outstanding issues

Representatives of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia) will continue consultations on the outstanding issues of creating the union’s a common gas market. This was reported by the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). </p> <p> </p> <p> On 23 Dec 2021, the EEC headquarters hosted a meeting of EEU states’ energy agency chiefs to discuss sensitive matters relating to the creation of the union’s common gas market. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The meeting participants confirmed the necessity of ensuring non-discriminatory and transparent pricing and tariff policy in the common market for gas transportation services, exchanged views on the validity of bilateral international treaties and peculiarities of determination of market participants. The parties expressed their willingness to settle particularly sensitive issues of gas supply and agreed to continue substantive consultations on the harmonization of certain provisions of the draft international treaty and the common rules of access,” the statement said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The final decision will be made by the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (EEC) in spring 2022. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, in May 2020, the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council approved the Eurasian economic integration strategy for the period to 2025. Armenia and Belarus rejected the gas tariff calculation formula. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in this regard that a common gas tariff formula requires greater integration. Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the meeting on integration processes in the EEU on January 20, 2021 that EEU members had started building the common markets of gas, oil and oil products. </p> <p> </p> <p> In December 2020, the heads of EEU countries approved an action plan on harmonization of the EEU countries' legislation in the oil sector, and also decided to move to the second stage of formation of the common gas market - creation of its infrastructure, technological and legal basis. It was previously planned that the common oil and gas markets in the EEU will start operating on January 1, 2025. </p> <p> </p> <p> The EEU is an international economic integration association established on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space, which has been operating since 1 January 2015. The EEU ensures freedom of movement of goods, as well as services, capital and labour, and pursues coordinated, harmonised or unified policies in the sectors of the economy.
