Biden orders to bring to account those responsible for Ryanair incident in Belarus

U.S. President Joe Biden has condemned the incident with the Ryanair passenger aircraft and the detention of blogger Roman Protasevich in Belarus, called for his release and said he instructed to develop measures to bring to justice for what happened, the press service of the White House said in a statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Belarus’ forced diversion of a commercial Ryanair flight, traveling between two member states of the European Union, and subsequent removal and arrest of Roman Protasevich, a Belarusian journalist traveling abroad, are a direct affront to international norms. The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms both the diversion of the plane and the subsequent removal and arrest of Mr. Protasevich,” TASS reports citing Biden’s statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> Biden has called to release Protasevich and other political prisoners. </p> <p> </p> <p> The U.S. president says he joins the many calls for an international investigation to ascertain the complete facts of the case and welcomes the news that the European Union has called for targeted economic sanctions and other measures. Biden says he has asked his team to develop appropriate options to hold accountable those responsible, in close coordination with the European Union, other allies and partners, and international organizations. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus used a fighter aircraft on May 23 to force down a Ryanair flight on its way from Athens to Vilnius under the guise of a bomb threat, which subsequently proved to be false, and arrested dissident journalist Roman Protasevich, who was listed as a terrorist by the Belarusian authorities and declared wanted by the state. He is charged under three articles of the Criminal Code of Belarus. Under one of the articles, Protasevich is charged with masterminding mass riots. End </p>
