Beltelecom getting infrastructure ready to handle biometric documents, ID cards
<p> MINSK, Apr 1 - PrimePress. Belarus’ telecommunications operator Beltelecom is making preparations for the moment, when ID cards and biometric passports are introduced in Belarus. This was reported by the company's press service. </p> <p> </p> <p> “All branches of the company have automated workplaces with equipment for scanning ID cards. At present, there are more than 125 of them, the number will be increased as the need arises. Beltelecom specialists have upgraded their own information systems to work with ID cards. Now they automatically interact with the Unified System of Identification of Individuals and Legal Entities, which is a component of the Belarusian Integrated Service and Settlement System (BISRS). If a subscriber has an ID-card, the service centre operator will receive all necessary information using the electronic identification system. Thus, the use of ID cards will significantly speed up the contracting process,” the report says. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, biometric documents for individuals will be introduced in Belarus on September 1, 2021. Their use will automate the identification procedure, simplify passport control at border crossings and will contribute to the development of electronic services. </p> <p> </p> <p> A smart chip containing the photo image, fingerprints and other personal data of the holder will be embedded in new types of documents. </p> <p> </p> <p> A total of eight new types of documents containing biometric data will appear including a citizen identification card and a biometric passport. </p> <p> </p> <p> ID cards will be used in Belarus to prove the identity of the holder. Biometric passports will be needed for travelling abroad. If a citizen does not plan such trips, there is no need to get such a passport. It can be produced only if the applicant has an ID card.
