BelNPP restarts first unit next week after equipment replacement

The first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) has resumed electricity production after equipment replacement, the press-service of Belarus’ Energy Ministry said in a statement on Nov 19. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is now reconnected to the grid after the replacement of voltage transformers in the measuring circuits of the generator switch, as well as tests of thermal power equipment, necessary measurements and research,” the report says. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the first power unit of the BelNPP was integrated into the unified power grid of Belarus on November 3. On November 7, the first unit reached the capacity of 400 MW, and on November 8 the production of electricity was suspended due to the breakdown of electrical equipment. The Energy Ministry of Belarus confirmed the fact of temporary interruption of electricity supply from the Belarusian NPP. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the BelNPP construction schedule, the pilot operation phase of the first power unit is scheduled to start in December. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The first power unit was launched on November 3, 2020.
