BelNPP postpones Unit 1 launch due to generator problem

The launch of the first unit of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) has been postponed due to problems with the generator, according to information published by the telegram channel of the Ministry of Energy of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> After the shutdown of the BelNPP’s first reactor on 23 July, the Belarusian Ministry of Energy reported that it would take some time to fix the problems, and the reactor launch was scheduled for mid-August. </p> <p> </p> <p> The ministry’s message says that an audit of equipment and technical systems of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has been finished. The audit was organized to find out why automatic generator protection kicked in on 12 July. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the source, tests prompted the need to replace one of the components of the turbine generator’s exciter. The relevant work is in progress with assistance of the Russian manufacturer. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Energy Ministry noted that once the work is over, additional tests and the diagnostics of the equipment and systems of the turbine generator will be organized. Then the first unit will be reconnected to the power grid. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020.
