BelNPP generates 4bn kWh of electricity since launch – minister

The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) has produced 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity since the first power unit started operating in November 2020, said Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich. </p> <p> </p> <p> After the last shutdown, the first unit of BelNPP has already reached the nominal capacity level of 1170 MW, said Karankevich, the press service of the Ministry of Energy informs. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the first unit was out of service from 12 July to 4 October 2021. On 12 July 2021, it was shut down due to generator malfunctions. It was the eighth shutdown in nine months. The first time it was shut down was on 10 November 2020 for 10 days just three days after the official launch. The reactor was then shut down for December 3-21, 2020, in 2021 for 16-21 January 2021, February 20-March 8, March 9-15, March 25-31, April 7-May 6. </p> <p> </p> <p> A hot functional test was completed at the second unit, the minister informed. The main equipment and process systems of the reactor unit were checked for operating capacity. “They plan to load fresh nuclear fuel into the reactor core of the BelNPP second unit before the end of the year. The power unit is planned to be commissioned in 2022,” Karankevich said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP was put into commercial operation on 10 June 2021, the second power unit – due in H1 2022. End </p>
