BelNPP generates 4.3bn kWh of electricity since launch – Energy Ministry

The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) has generated 4.3 billion kWh of electricity, since it was connected to the power grid in November 2020, said Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Since it was connected to the power grid in November 2020, the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has generated 4.3 billion kWh of electricity. It allowed substituting 1.2 billion m3 of natural gas,” the Energy Ministry’s official telegram channel reports citing Karankevich as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> The report says that after the main measures meant to integrate the nuclear power plant into the national power grid were completed, about 1,600km of high-voltage power lines were built, four backbone electric substations were upgraded, and the 330kV high-tech substation Postavy was commissioned. </p> <p> </p> <p> Besides, modern electric boilers with the total installed capacity of 916MW were commissioned at 20 facilities. Work continues to build peaking and backup power plants with the total capacity of 800MW to keep the power grid operating reliably taking into account various modes of the nuclear power plant's operation. </p> <p> </p> <p> After the last shutdown, the first unit of BelNPP has already reached the nominal capacity level of 1170 MW, Karankevich told the press on 12 October. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the first unit was out of service from 12 July to 4 October 2021. On 12 July 2021, it was shut down due to generator malfunctions. It was the eighth shutdown in nine months. The first time it was shut down was on 10 November 2020 for 10 days just three days after the official launch. The reactor was then shut down for December 3-21, 2020, in 2021 for 16-21 January 2021, February 20-March 8, March 9-15, March 25-31, April 7-May 6. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP was put into commercial operation on 10 June 2021, the second power unit – due in H1 2022. End </p>
