BelNPP due to disconnect Unit 1 from grid Feb 20

The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) will conduct a planned shutdown of the first unit of the power plant on 20 February 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> The State Power Engineering Association Belenergo made a statement to this effect in its Telegram channel. </p> <p> </p> <p> The first unit of Belenergo will be shut down for testing and maintenance work in accordance with the program of pilot operation stage. The timing of this work was not reported. </p> <p> </p> <p> After its official launch on 3 November 2020, BelNPP Unit 1 has already been shut down three times. On November 9, 2020, the BelNPP Information Centre reported about a turbine shutdown at Unit 1 due to a failure of voltage transformers, and on November 19, BelNPP was reconnected to the country's unified power system. On 1 December 2020, the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Belarus reported that during comprehensive tests at the first unit of BelNPP, steam was discharged to test systems and equipment and the need for additional adjustments to the steam silencers' covers was identified. The turbine generator of Unit 1 was connected to the power system only on 21 December. On 16 Jan 2021 Unit 1 was disconnected from the grid after the generator protection system kicked in. </p> <p> </p> <p> The European Parliament adopted a resolution on 11 February 2021 demanding the suspension of the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant and raising safety concerns. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP is expected to be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in the first half of 2022. End </p>
