Belarusians’ FX sales exceed FX purchases by $85.7m in Feb 2021

FX sales by Belarus’ private households exceeded their FX purchases from banks by $85.7 million in Feb 2021: individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $431.8 million and sold to banks $517.5 million, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in an official statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> All in all, individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $872.4 million and sold to banks $965.9 million cash foreign currency, with FX sales exceeding FX purchases by $93.5m. </p> <p> </p> <p> Cashless FX purchases by individuals totalled $132.9 million in Feb 2021: gross cashless FX purchases – $324.8 million, sales – $191.9 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Feb 2021, cashless FX purchases by individuals totalled $294.9 million: cashless FX purchases – $651 million, sales – $356.1 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Feb 2021, net FX purchases by individuals (both cash and cashless) stood at $47.2 million, gross purchases – $756.6m, gross sales – $709.4m. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Feb 2021, FX purchases by individuals totalled $1.523bn, FX sales – $1.322 bn, margin – $201m. </p> <p> </p> <p> In February alone, FX purchases by resident companies totalled $1.985bn, FX sales – $1.809 bn, margin - $176m. In Jan-Feb 2021, FX purchases by resident companies totalled $3.863bn, FX sales – $3.736bn, margin – $127m. </p> <p> </p> <p> With non-resident companies, the Feb 2021 figures stood at $16.2 million (purchases), $81.3 million (sales) and $65.1 million (margin), respectively. Jan-Feb 2021: $28.3m (purchases), $162.3m (sales), $134m – margin. </p> <p> </p> <p> The National Bank does not post statistical reports on currency exchange transactions conducted by non-resident companies in accordance with the EEU Treaty of May 29, 2014. Hence, the official data on non-residents’ FX transactions on the domestic market are incomplete. </p> <p> </p> <p> Resident banks, the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus JSC and non-bank credit and financial organizations bought in Feb 2021 at their own expense (without conversion operations) $3.559 billion, sold – $3.412 billion, margin – $147 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> Their FX purchases on the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange OJSC (BCSE) in Feb 2021 totalled $884.3 million, sales – $639 million, margin – $245.3 million. Purchases on the OTC market stood at $2.157 billion, sales – $2.341 billion, margin – minus $183.7 million. Purchases on the cash currency market totalled $517.5m, sales – $431.8 million, margin – plus $85.7 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, since January 2020, the National Bank began to publish data on spot transactions of resident banks, the Development Bank and the NCFD at its own expense (without conversion operations) on the purchase and sale of foreign currency in the domestic market. This gives a more accurate picture of what is happening in the foreign exchange market. </p> <p> </p> <p> The official weighted average rate of the Belarusian ruble against the US dollar stood at Br2.6047/$1 in Jan-Feb 2021.
