Belarusians’ FX purchases exceed FX sales by $29.4m in Dec 2020

FX purchases by Belarus’ private households exceeded their FX sales from banks by $29.4 million in December 2020: individuals purchased from Belarusian banks $613.7 million and sold to banks $584.3 million, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in an official statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Dec 2020, individuals purchased from banks $6.433 billion worth of cash foreign exchange and sold to banks $6.285 billion. FX sales by Belarus’ private households exceeded their FX purchases from banks by $148 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> December’s net cashless FX purchases by individuals totaled $201.5 million: gross cashless FX purchases – $405.1 million, sales – $203.6 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Dec 2020, cashless FX purchases by individuals stood at $3.791bn, sales – $1.969bn, margin – $1.178bn. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Dec 2020, net FX purchases by individuals (both cash and cashless) stood at $231 million, gross purchases – $1.019bn, gross sales – $788m. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Dec 2020, FX purchases (both cash and cashless) by individuals totaled $10.224bn, FX sales – $8.254bn, margin - $1.97bn. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Dec 2020, Belarus’ resident companies purchased $2.238 billion and sold $2.206 billion. Hence, in the corporate sector, FX purchases exceeded FX sales by $32 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Dec 2020, FX purchases by resident companies totaled $23.139bn, FX sales – $22.161bn, margin – $978m. </p> <p> </p> <p> With non-resident companies, the Dec 2020 figures stood at $21.5 million (purchases), $72 million (sales) and $50.5 million (margin), respectively. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Dec 2020, purchases by non-resident companies totaled $263.6m, FX sales – $860.3m, margin – $596.7m. </p> <p> </p> <p> The National Bank does not post statistical reports on currency exchange transactions conducted by non-resident companies in accordance with the EEU Treaty of May 29, 2014. Hence, the official data on non-residents’ FX transactions on the domestic market are incomplete. </p> <p> </p> <p> Resident banks, the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus JSC and non-bank credit and financial organizations bought in Dec 2020 at their own expense (without conversion operations) $3.969 billion, sold – $4.002 billion, margin – $33 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> Their FX purchases on the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange OJSC (BCSE) in Dec 2020 totaled $813.4 million, sales – $642.8 million, margin – $170.6 million. Purchases on the OTC market stood at $2.571 billion, sales – $2.746 billion, margin – minus $175 million. Purchases on the cash currency market totaled $584.3 million, sales – $613.7 million, margin – minus $29.4 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Jan-Dec 2020, resident banks, the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus JSC and non-bank credit and financial organizations bought $42.188 billion, sold $42.903 billion, the margin being minus $715 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> They bought $9.733 billion on the BCSE in Jan-Dec 2020 and sold $7.899 billion (+$1.834bn); bought $26.17 billion on the OTC market and sold $28.571 billion (-$2.401bn); bought $6.285 billion on the cash currency market and sold $6.433 billion (-$148m). </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, since January 2020, the National Bank began to publish data on spot transactions of resident banks, the Development Bank and the NCFD at its own expense (without conversion operations) on the purchase and sale of foreign currency in the domestic market. This gives a more accurate picture of what is happening in the foreign exchange market. </p> <p> </p> <p> The official weighted average rate of the Belarusian ruble against the US dollar stood at Br2.4607/$1 in Jan-Dec 2020, at Br2.5618/$1 in Dec 2020.
