Belarus to borrow €100m from IBRD to upgrade tertiary education
<p> MINSK, Oct 21 - PrimePress. Belarus will borrow 100 million euros from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) for the modernization of the tertiary education system of Belarus, as per presidential decree No.367 of October 19, 2020 ‘On the Approval of the International Agreement and its Implementation’ published on the National Legal Internet Portal on October 21, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> The IBRD and the Education Ministry of Belarus signed online the loan agreement on June 23, 2020. The funds will be used to create and modernize the educational environment in 18 universities, including 10 regional ones. </p> <p> </p> <p> The project provides for the creation of an interdisciplinary education and research center at the Belarusian State University, which would comprise 37 university laboratories and 9 shared centers, and modernization of more than 60 educational research laboratories and renovation of university buildings. </p> <p> </p> <p> The project also envisages the establishment of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (at all levels of education), training in new disciplines (bioengineering, nano-chemistry, synthetic and systems biology, bioinformatics, biomechanics, etc.), and create opportunities for online education. </p> <p> </p> <p> The IBRD is the main lending institution of the World Bank (WB). Cooperation between Belarus and the WB is currently based on the WB Group Partnership Strategy for 2018-2022, adopted in 2018. According to the Ministry of Economy of Belarus, over the entire period of cooperation from 1992 to 2019, WB’s total investment in the Belarusian economy amounted to over $1.7 billion. Currently, the WB investment portfolio in Belarus includes eight projects totaling $843.41 million. End </p>
