Belarus’ Supreme Court sentences Viktor Babariko to 14 years in prison

On July 6, 2021, the Supreme Court of Belarus has sentenced Viktor Babariko, former presidential candidate, former Chairman of the Board of Belgazprombank, to 14 years in a medium security penitentiary and banned him from managerial positions for five years.<br> <br> Babariko was also fined Br145,000 ($57,200 at the rate of the National Bank of Belarus).<br> <br> Babariko’s trial began on February 17, 2021. He was charged under sections 430.3 and 235.2 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (gross bribery committed by an organized group and money laundering. He did not plead guilty. <br> <br> According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Babariko was also to reimburse over Br47 million ($18.53 million) in criminal incomes.<br> <br> Former top managers of Belgazprombank Sergei Shaban and Dmitri Kuzmich were sentenced to 6 and 6.5 years in a medium security penitentiary, respectively; Kirill Badei, Alexander Ilyasyuk, Sergei Dobrolet – to 5.5 years each in a medium security penitentiary; Alexei Zadoyko – to restraint of liberty for five years without imprisonment, considering his health condition; Activleasing founder Viktor Kobyak – to 3 years in a medium security penitentiary for gross bribery.<br> <br> The verdict is not subject to appeal and enters into legal force from the date of pronouncement.<br> <br> As previously reported, Babariko had been managing Belgazprombank from July 2000 to May 12, 2020. In the spring of 2020, he decided to run for president of Belarus. He was detained on June 18. Six other former top managers of Belgazprombank, including Babariko’s deputies, were charged with gross bribery in an organized group, and pleaded guilty. The State Control Committee of Belarus said in June 2020 that Russian Gazprom, which owns Belgazprombank, was likely to be behind Babariko in his criminal activities. End (Br2,5358/$1)<br> <br>
